Practical Telephone Hand Book & Guide to Telephonic Exchange, Baldwin, T.S., comp. and ed.
2 Baldwin, T.S., comp. and ed. Practical Telephone Hand Book & Guide to Telephonic Exchange
Chicago Frederick J. Drake & Co. (c.1902) Presumed 1st Hardcover Near Fine
(no dust jacket) [an exceptionally nice copy: mild wear to cloth at corners and spine extremities, one tiny dent at top of rear cover, and a couple of slightly bumped corners, but the gilt lettering (on the front cover and spine) and the silver border and illustration of a telephone wiring diagram (on the front cover) show only the slightest rubbing, and the book's overall appearance is clean and bright]. (B&W drawings) "Chapters on the use of the telephone, series and bridging phones, line construction, materials to be used, locating and correction of faults in instruments and lines, the apparatus and methods used in making all of the tests required in commercial telephone work including the exchange, are fully and carefully treated; and in addition, plain, easy instructions on farm telephones, which are of inestimable value to promoters of rural party lines." I doubt you'll find a nicer copy of this important early popular work on telephony -- considering that this is a very nuts-and-bolts type guide to telephone installation and operation, one can only assume that it was never actually used "in the field." Chapter I is an enthusiastic -- at times verging on poetic -- paean to the myriad benefits that the new-fangled gadget will bring to regular folks, especially on isolated farms. ("The telephone is a saver of time, an annihilator of distance." "It will enable ladies to visit each other without the troublesome necessity of dressing and driving long distances over bad roads with a team needed in the fields.") And Chapter XIII starts out by telling you "How to Make a Telephone" (from scratch!). A wonderfully evocative document that, in an age when we take instantaneous worldwide communication via e-mail for granted, reads like ancient history.

Tradition and Change in Three Generations of Japanese Americans, Connor, John W.
4 Connor, John W. Tradition and Change in Three Generations of Japanese Americans
Chicago Nelson-Hall (c.1977) 0-88229-288-9 / 9780882292885 First Edition Hardcover Fine in Very Good+ dj
[nice clean book, no discernible wear; jacket shows moderate edgewear, a little scuffing to front and rear panels]. (tables, figures) "This study of the acculturation of three generations of Japanese Americans is based on both biographical data and psychological tests. After describing the focus of his investigation and the various research instruments that were employed, [the author] presents the historical framework within which distinctive Japanese and American characteristics developed. An account of Tokugama, Japan is followed by an analysis of the effects of nineteenth-century modernization and the American occupation after World War II. Similarly, the author traces the importance of the frontier heritage to the American way of life. The remainder of the book contains a wealth of detailed information concerning cultural change. Much of this information has not been available previously, since this is the first time that identical psychological tests were administered to three generations of Japanese."

New York Van Nostrand Reinhold Company (c.1981) 0-442-28253-2 / 9780442282530 First Edition Hardcover Fine in Very Good+ dj
(price-clipped) [nice clean copy, no significant wear to book; jacket shows light wear at extremities, moderate surface rubbing, one vertical crease in front flap]. (B&W/color photographs) "In this photographic essay, the authors have set out to record the tradition of the small English shop while it still survives. Up and down the country, theyhave photographed those shops that seem to sum up a particular aspect of this tradition, whether through design and decoration of the shop and its front, the signs which proclaim its trade, its display of wares in the window, or simply its friendly service, always reflective of the strong and idiosyncratic personality of the shopkeeper. Incuded here are the butcher, fishmonger, greengrocer, florist, dairy, baker, tobbaconist, bookseller, ironmonger, chandler, draper, milliner and others -- each of them part of a tradition which remains quintessentially English."

Getting Them Into the Blue, Gann, Ernest K.
11 Gann, Ernest K. Getting Them Into the Blue
New York Thomas Y. Crowell Company (c.1942) First Edition Hardcover Very Good
(no dust jacket) [light shelfwear, spine cloth somewhat faded, small bookseller's label ("Sold by The Methodist Publishing House, Nashville") at bottom corner of front pastedown; although the full jacket is not present, the complete text from has been neatly trimmed from both flaps, and the two pieces are laid into the book]. (B&W photographs, diagrams, drawings) The third published book by Gann, later the author of such aviation-themed epics as "Island in the Sky" and "The High and the Mighty." Like his other early works, this was written for juvenile (e.g. young adult) readers, and tells "the story of how planes are planned, how they are made, how they are powered. In fact, this is the entire thrilling story of airplanes -- the best airplanes in the world -- in their progress from the drafting boards and mock-ups through our great factories out into the sky." Although the content has been appropriately simplified for its intended readership, it doesn't give the impression of being "dumbed down"; it does seem clear, though, that the book is in some measure a recruiting tool, intended to get its young (but not that young) (and mostly male) readers excited about flying in a wartime context.

(B&W/color photos, diagrams, charts, ads, etc.) A thorough review of all things automotive during 1959, divided between general matters (including automobile design and manufacturing) and a review of the year's major races and rallies: the Grand Prix (in Monaco, Belgium, the U.K., Italy, etc.), the Indianapolis 500, etc. Some of the more interesting articles include: "The Influence of Experts on the Conception and Testing of a Mass Produced Car"; "The Italian Line" (a historial survey of the Italian coachbuilding tradition, with many illustrations); a historical survey of Fiat; "The Parking Problem" (showcasing various innovative designs for parking garages); and "One Problem: Three Solutions" (in which three noted auto designers discuss the philosophies behind their small cars, the Austin-Morris Baby Car, the Fiat 600, and the Triumph Herald). Profusely illustrated throughout, the book contains numerous photographs and technical specifications for cars made in the U.S., Great Britain, Italy, Germany, Japan, Sweden, and elsewhere; included is a double-page fold-out drawing of the Aston Martin DBR 1/300. One rather amusing editorial note states that in addition to the regular staff employed each year to turn out the English, French and German editions, this year "for our accounts of the 1959 races we called upon a specialist who writes in a fourth language: that used by some of the motor racing enthusiasts of the United States." (I guess they must have had some complaints about sounding too European.)

Basic Propaganda, Kamins, Bernard Francis
18 Kamins, Bernard Francis Basic Propaganda
Los Angeles Houlgate House 1951 First Edition Hardcover Fine in Very Good+ dj
[book itself is tight and clean, virtually as new; jacket has two short closed tears at top of front panel, a little wear and a couple of short splits along rear flap foldover]. A textbookish discussion of the topic that combines, per the publisher's introductory note, a "theoretical approach and informed background [with the author's] practical experience and easy-to-read style." The book was heartily (if somewhat anomalously) endorsed by noted songwriter Jimmy McHugh, who describes the author as "a public relations counsellor for motion picture promotions, television company activities, legal cases, political campaigns, actors, actresses, swimming meets, and a variety of business problems," and lauding him as "high above reproach, because Public Relations with him has been based on honesty." (Kamins also had a minor career as a screenwriter, including a shared screenplay credit for the 1944 Hopalong Cassidy film FORTY THIEVES.)
