The Photographs of Ron Galella 1965-1989, (Galella, Ron) Bluttal, Steven, ed.
1 (Galella, Ron) Bluttal, Steven, ed. The Photographs of Ron Galella 1965-1989
Los Angeles Greybull Press (c.2003) 0-9727788-1-0 / 9780972778817 Second Edition Softcover Good
[covers are noticeably edgeworn, slightly dog-eared at corners, small remainder dot on bottom edge; otherwise a sound, clean copy]. Trade PB (B&W and color photographs) Nearly 150 photographs of the famous and once-famous, by the photographer who "helped pioneer the culture of celebrity watching as we now know it" (sez Tom Ford in the book's introduction, almost like that's a *good* thing). Generally regarded as the first of the modern-day paparazzi, Galella was "an opportunist and a daredevil" who spent most of the 1960s, 1970s and 1980s sticking his camera in the faces of people who didn't always welcome the attention -- most notoriously Jackie Kennedy Onassis, who famously sued him in 1972 to keep him the hell away from her and her children. (It didn't really work.) In addition to Ford's Introduction, there's a thoughtful and evocative Preface, so-called (which appears about one-quarter of the way into the book), by Diane Keaton, who speaks of Galella as "the Dean" and speaks from the perspective of someone who was herself a subject of his attention, and who also knew many of the others he photographed. Quoth Ms. Keaton: "Ron Galella has given us the true landscape of celebrity in the faces of the eminently watchable, not so mysterious, victims of Narcissus' kiss." The book also incorporates an interview with Galella, conducted by Glenn O'Brien. (The second edition was "limited to 4000 softbound copies.)

2 (International Center of Photography) Handy, Ellen, curator Reflections in a Glass Eye: Works from the International Center of Photography Collection
Boston Bulfinch Press/Little, Brown and Company (c.1999) 0-8212-2625-8 / 9780821226254 First Edition Hardcover Fine in Near Fine dj
[book is tight, clean, as-new; jacket shows just a bit of surface handling wear]. (B&W/color photographs) "Published on the occasion of ICP's twenty-fifth anniversary, [this book] provides an innovative look at the diversity of the photographic medium. The selection displays great strength in documentary photography and photojournalism, as well as a marvelous range of fine art, commercial, and vernacular photography. It presents the work of such masters as Richard Avedon, Weegee, Cindy Sherman, Robert Capa, Dorothea Lange, Henri Cartier-Bresson, Margaret Bourke-White, Alfredo Jaar, Ansel Adams, and Irving Penn alongside that of lesser known and anonymous photographers. [It] provides a delightfully unconventional compendium of the infinitely varying viewpoints of its many practitioners." Preface by Willis E. Hartshorn. Essays by Anne Hollander, Diane Johnson, Ann Lauterbach, and Charles Simic. Introduction by Ellen Handy.

In a Blue Moon [*SIGNED*], Dorr, Nell
4 Dorr, Nell In a Blue Moon [*SIGNED*]
New York G.P. Putnam's Sons 1939 NO First Edition Hardcover Very Good+ Illustrated by (lettering) George A. DuBerg Signed by Author
(no dust jacket; in worn slipcase, with a minor professional repair to the bottom edge) [spine cloth moderately faded, but no significant wear to book]. (B&W photographs) INSCRIBED and SIGNED by the author/photographer on the second front endpaper: "For Fred Gately - / We have made / a lovely shadow across / the moon together. / Nell Dorr / 1940." Dorr's first book of photographs, consisting almost entirely of one of her stocks-in-trade, i.e. artsy black-and-white photographs of children (and some adults) frolicking in the nude, the idea being to evoke an idyllic, fairyland-type setting; one critic called the book "a dream-like expression of beauty." The photographs were taken "on the Florida Keyes [sic] in the year 1929." The inscribee was cinematographer Frederick Gately, later a pioneer in shooting films for TV, who in 1940 had already been lensing commercial and documentary films for a decade. Dorr, although almost exclusively a still photographer, made her own foray into filmmaking in 1954, when she produced and directed a short film called "The Golden Key," notable for being shot at the McCready/Tudor (as in Tasha Tudor) family home in Webster, New Hampshire. [Note that a minor repair has been made to the bottom of the slipcase by a professional paper conservator.] Signed by Author

5 Johnson, Robert, and Arthur Brunel Chatwood Photography, Artistic and Scientific
New York George D. Hurst [ca. 1895] Unstated Hardcover Very Good-
(no dust jacket) [gilt lettering on spine and front cover still bright; book has absorbed some moisture at some point, as there is dampstaining on the front cover and at the margins of both endpapers and pastedowns, and the book itself is a bit bowed; aside from that, however, this is a good solid copy, internally quite clean; there is a bit of damage (splitting) to part of the internal front hinge, but no separation, and the binding is completely intact]. (B&W photographs, diagrams) Very scarce early photography volume, printed in London (per a statement at the back of the book) despite the New York publisher's imprint, and bearing no date on the book itself (the Library of Congress's copy is catalogued as an 1895 publication). 54 illustrations, on 28 plates.

Shooting Stars: The Rolling Stone Book of Portraits, Leibovitz, Annie, ed.; designed by Tony Lane
6 Leibovitz, Annie, ed.; designed by Tony Lane Shooting Stars: The Rolling Stone Book of Portraits
San Francisco Straight Arrow Books (c.1973) 0-87932-036-2 / 9780879320362 First Edition Softcover Very Good
[light soiling to covers, short corner-bend creases at both leading corners of front cover]. Trade PB (B&W photographs) A collection of 100 or so black-and-white shots of rock stars of the 1967-1973 era, structured as a set of mini-portfolios, with each of the 21 featured photographers making a one-page statement about his or her working methods (although Leibovitz herself is the only "her" in the otherwise all-male group), followed by a handful of examples of their work. Many are reproduced full-page; a few will register as "iconic"; and there's a smattering of nudity involved (including a full-page reproduction of a proof sheet of shots of Janis Joplin, and an full-frontal image of Duane Allman that you'll probably wish you could unsee). Plenty of the usual suspects show up -- the Grateful Dead, Lennon, McCartney, Dylan, Jagger, even a very young Michael Jackson -- along with those who's faded into obscurity. The photographers themselves are a pretty distinguished lot, including many of the finest workers in this particular field: in addition the Leibovitz herself, the others include Ed Caraeff, Michael Cooper (who committed suicide just before this book was published), Henry Diltz, Barry Feinstein, David Gahr, Herb Greene, Elliott Landy, Jim Marshall, Jim McCrary, Stephen Paley, Ethan Russell, Bob Seidemann, Norman Seeff, Peter Simon, Guy Webster, Thomas Weir, and Baron Wolman. I don't think it would be much of an exaggeration (speaking of iconic) to say that this group was collectively responsible for three-quarters of all rock album covers during the late 1960s and 1970s.

Trade PB (B&W photographs) INSCRIBED ("for richard / XX"), SIGNED (with a squiggly "LL") and dated ("La '83") by the book's subject on the half-title page, which also bears her calligraphic decoration of two black Xs, a pair of rings (one gold), and a red heart. A stunning photographic celebration of the extraordinary musculature of Ms. Lyon, the first World Women's Bodybuilding Champion. Mapplethorpe and Lyon met in 1980, and their collaboration resulted in a series of portraits and figure studies, a film, and this book. Signed by Biographee

10 Morgan, Willard D., and Henry M. Lester, eds. Miniature Camera Work; emphasizing the entire field of photography with modern miniature cameras
New York Morgan & Lester 1938 NO First Edition Hardcover Very Good+
(laminated pictorial boards, no dust jacket; presumably as issued) [moderate wear to extremities, both top and bottom of spine are slightly chipped and have been tape-reinforced, small stain on top edge, one-time owner's name and date of purchase on front pastedown (B&W and color photographs, ads) Wonderful compilation of articles and essays on the then-current state of in-the-field photography. The contributors include such luminaries as Ansel Adams ("The Expanding Photographic Universe"), Alfred Eisenstadt ("Eyes That See," an interview) and Lewis Jacobs ("Surrealism for the Photographer"). And it's hard to think of any prominent photographer of the era whose work isn't represented: Margaret Bourke-White, Eliot Elisofon, Peter Stackpole, Russell Lee, Dorothea Lange, Berenice Abbott, Moholy-Nagy, Carl Van Vechten, Martin Munkacsi, etc. etc. and etc. (OK, I guess I don't see Walker Evans -- but you get the picture, no pun intended.) Life Magazine and its staff are acknowledged, as are the Museum of Modern Art, the WPA, the Farm Security Administration, etc. Quite a decent copy of a book that doesn't wear well.

Mostly Off-Guard!: The Photography of Hal Sloane [*SIGNED*], Sloane, Hal
12 Sloane, Hal Mostly Off-Guard!: The Photography of Hal Sloane [*SIGNED*]
Palm Springs CA Hall/Sloane Publishing (c.2006) 0-9638683-3-0 / 9780963868336 First Edition Hardcover Fine in Near Fine dj Signed by Author
[nice copy, presents as-new, with just a touch of edge- and surface-wear to the jacket]. (B&W and color photographs) SIGNED by the author/photographer on the title page. "An eclectic personal chronicle of people, places and events of the last half of the 20th Century." Sloane's career as a photo-journalist and musical event producer stretched over four decades, and in addition to a bunch of celebrity photography he also covered such historic events as the neo-Nazi march in Skokie, Illinois, in 1978, and the restul of Ethiopian Jews from refugee camps in Sudan in 1985. It's a bit of a stretch, though, to claim (as does the jacket blurb) that "his eclectic body of work echos such photographic icons as Annie Liebowitz [sic] and Cartier-Brisson [sic]." (And seriously: if you're going to invoke such distinguished names as a kind of left-handed compliment to yourself, it really is a good idea to at least spell their names correctly.)
