The Stream of Jewish Life [revised ed.], Alofsin, Dorothy
1 Alofsin, Dorothy The Stream of Jewish Life [revised ed.]
New York Union of American Hebrew Congregations 1947 4th printing Hardcover Near Fine
(decorated cloth; no dust jacket) [nice solid copy, very clean, minimal shelfwear]. (B&W photographs) Published by the Union of American Hebrew Congregations; publication "made possible by the establishment of a fund for the publication of Jewish religious school literature by the National Federation of Temple Sisterhood." Very nice copy of the revised edition of this picaresque look at modern-day American Jewish life and institutions, as high-school sophomore Jerry accompanies his Uncle Saul (a successful author visiting from London) on a road trip along the Eastern Seaboard (with much time spent in New York City and environs). Post-war revision of a book originally published in 1943, this version containing much discussion of Zionism and of the vital Jewish issue of the day, namely the resettlement of Palestine. There is some passing discussion of anti-semitism, but only the most oblique references to the horrors of the Holocaust (and no index entries for Hitler, although his name pops up here and there in the text).

The Rise of the Goldbergs, Berg, Gertrude; introduction by Eddie Cantor
3 Berg, Gertrude; introduction by Eddie Cantor The Rise of the Goldbergs
New York/Newark Barse & Co. (c.1931) First Edition Hardcover Near Fine in Very Good+ dj Illustrated by (dj) Politzer
(price-clipped) [a lightly-worn book, with a minor bump to the top rear corner and some slight dust-soiling to the top edge; jacket is bright and colorful, with some very minor paper loss at spine ends (no loss of text), some internal dampstaining to the rear panel with only negligible effect to the exterior]. (frontispiece photo of Gertrude Berg) "The Rise of the Goldbergs" (the title was eventually shortened to simply "The Goldbergs") debuted as a 15-minute weekly program on NBC radio in November of 1929, and was an immediate hit. The show became a daily broadcast in 1931, the same year this book appeared, and by which time (per the book's introduction) NBC had received "so many requests .... for copies of the episodes that it has been found advisable to publish the first volume with subsequent volumes to follow." (Essentially, then, these are radio scripts rendered into short-story form.) The radio series ran through 1946 and was subsequently adapted for both Broadway ("Molly and Me") and as an early TV series -- but interestingly, although the intro to this book even mentions "numerous offers...from moving picture producers," they didn't get around to making a "Goldbergs" movie until 1950. (One can easily imagine Samuel Goldwyn sagely declaring the property "too Jewish!") The colorful dustjacket, with a cartoon illustration of the Berg clan, is a genuine rarity.

Rabbi and Priest: A Story, Goldsmith, Milton
6 Goldsmith, Milton Rabbi and Priest: A Story
Philadelphia Jewish Publication Society of America 1936 (c.1891) Reprint Hardcover Very Good
(brown cloth, no dust jacket) [moderately worn copy, light bumping at a couple of corners, a few very slightly scrunched lower page corners, gilt spine lettering rubbed but still readable; attractive custom vintage bookplate on front pastedown, previous owner's name/address on ffep]. Reprint of a novel first published in 1891, and, according to the author's original introduction, based on the story told to him by a Russian refugee named Joseph Kierson of "the terrible persecution which compelled such large numbers of his countrymen to flee from their once happy homes." The author acknowledges that his novel is based on Kierson's experiences, but disavows strict historical accuracy. Rather, he says, "in following the fortunes of Mendel Winenki, from boyhood to old age, [the book] endeavors to present a series of pictures portraying the character, life, and sufferings of the misunderstood and much-maligned Russian Jew." In addition, "in the description of Russia's customs and characteristics, the barbarous cruelty of her criminal code and the nihilistic tendencies of the times, the author has followed such eminent writers as Wallace, Foulke, Stepniak, Tolstoi and Herzberg-Fraenkel. The accounts of the riots of 1882 will be found to agree in historic details with the reports which were published at the time."

[minor shelfwear, library name stamp on ffep but NO other library marks of any sort, also a previous owner's last name in ink on ffep; jacket shows just a trace of surface wear]. (B&W photographs) (In the "ArtScroll History Series"). "The word 'Boston' conjures many images in the minds of Americans. To Jews, it has its own flavor. It means chassidic fervor, unbounded love for fellow Jews, and an inability to say no to a Jew in pain or need. The Bostoner Rebbe, Rabbi Levi Yitzchok Horowitz, is revered in America and Israel for all these characteristics. The community he created in the Har Nof neighborhood of Jerusalem is recreating all the holiness and love that he and his family still maintain in New England. His Boston spans the world. But Boston has a Rebbetzin as well as a Rebbe. This great lady, who prefers the trenches of service to the spotlight of honor, has now told her own personal story."

Memories of the Kirschner Family, Kirschner, Isadore L.
8 Kirschner, Isadore L. Memories of the Kirschner Family
(n.p.) (Privately Published) [1984] First Edition Hardcover Very Good+
(no dust jacket, as issued) [moderate soiling and external wear]. (B&W photographs) Nicely-done, well-illustrated history of the author's immediate family -- primarily his father and mother and his four brothers. His father emigrated from Russia to the United States in 1906, settling first in Philadelphia; later the family lived in Wildwood, New Jersey. (There was also a Chicago branch of the family, that of his father's brother.) Although inescapably anecdotal, the book is well put-together and is rich with detail about of the life of this American Jewish family. It's not just a nostalgia-fest, however, as the author appears to be reasonably forthright about various matters such as sibling rivalries, the difficult deaths of some family members, the lack of success of one brother, etc. Above all, though, it radiates the author's love of his family, and of his country, and of his faith. Every family should be so lucky as to have someone who takes the trouble to assemble this kind of chronicle.

Brooklyn NY Bp 1991 0-932351-30-1 / 9780932351302 First Edition Hardcover Near Fine in Near Fine dj
[nice tight copy, bottom corners bumped but otherwise no significant wear, previous owner's bookplate on ffep; jacket shows just mild handling wear]. (B&W photographs) The author "was born Tonica Marlow to a British evangelist father and an Egyptian Jewish mother. At the time of her birth, her father was already a full-fledged Protestant minister with an established congregation, and their household revolved exclusively around the church. At the age of sixteen, Tova was accepted as the youngest student at a noted Christian theological college, and within four years she had become an ordained minister. Her influence as a preacher, artist, and composer of Christian literature extended to all corners of the earth. And yet with all of her successful activity, she could not explain the deep pain she felt inside. She began to wonder about the incomplete logic behind many of the church teachings and practices; about the administration's questionable treatment of her family; about her mother's Jewish heritage. She asked questions, but the answers she received did not satisfy her. And so she began to search. This is the story of her remarkable quest for her true heritage."

"Taken together, all seven plays tell the story of the Jew in America struggling to assimilate yet pondering what being Jewish means and working out this conflict in masterful theatre pieces of comedy and drama." (I've noted this as a possible book club edition due to the absence of a printed price on the jacket; on the other hand, it bears a bar-coded ISBN, which is not typical of book club issues. So take your pick -- but either way, it's a lovely copy of the book, virtually as new.)

Boston The Stratford Company 1928 First Edition Hardcover Very Good+ in Good dj

The author undertakes in this book to address the "most serious maladjustment between life and religion" that he feels to be manifest in American Judaism. As the jacket blurb states: "Even the professing Orthodox Jew must admit that between the demands of religion and the call of modern American life the chasm is widening daily." However, by "following a proper historical perspective," he explains how to discover "the vital seed of self-preservation and ideal self-adjustment to prevailing conditions of life" that lies within Judaism itself. (This is a review copy, with the original publisher's slip laid in indicating that it was originally sent for review to the Literary Editor of the California Jewish Review in Los Angeles.)
