Thunder in the Heart, Weldon, John Lee
1 Weldon, John Lee Thunder in the Heart
New York Random House (c.1954) First Edition Hardcover Near Fine in Near Fine dj Illustrated by (dj design) George Salter
[very nice book, with just a touch of shelfwear at base of spine; jacket is bright and attractive, with very light soiling to the rear panel]. "Through this story of untamed emotion, brute force and vengeful deeds, there runs a tender, fragile thread of life, strong as hope, breakable as a young girl's heart." (Which rather obscures the fact that the protagonist is a prostitute.) The book was described somewhat derisively by a contemporary critic as having been "made out of the interior monologue of a Southern Moll Flanders," with the author accused of suffering from "Tennessee Williams syndrome." (Maybe in more ways than one: almost two decades went by before Weldon published another book, "Fabulous," a novel about a gay man and his parakeet, in 1971; then again, 18 years of silence followed by one more (final?) book, "Memory Touches Memory," issued by the Gay Men's Press in 1989. So is John Lee Weldon a lost/forgotten gay author? I couldn't possibly say.) Lovely George Salter jacket art, unusual for him in that he did not often depict such a naturalistic human face.
