Simpson (Marquerite, pre-Nicole), Pete Rose, Arnold Palmer, Willie Shoemaker, Rod Laver, Jim Bouton, Jack Nicklaus, Carl Yazstremski, Frank Robinson, even Howard Cosell (although that seems to be quite a stretch on the definition of "jock").

Bard, however, was and is a small liberal arts institution -- anything but a sports powerhouse. This is his diary of that season, in which he led a team described as "a ragtag collection of individualists with various degrees of competence and incompetence" to a 1-16 record.

Joe Louis, Man and Super-Fighter, Van Every, Edward
30 Van Every, Edward Joe Louis, Man and Super-Fighter
New York Frederick A. Stokes Company 1936 First Edition Hardcover Good in Good dj
[moderately worn copy, somewhat uneven dust-soiling to top edge, small white paper remnants stuck to book at bottom of both front and rear covers (apparently from dust jacket having been slightly water-stuck to book at some point); jacket heavily edgeworn, a bit of paper loss at spine ends and several corners, considerable surface wear to spine (although the lettering has all survived)]. (B&W photo frontispiece) Early-career bio of the Brown Bomber, published the year before he first took the heavyweight crown away from "Cinderella Man" James Braddock in a June 1937 bout in Chicago. He went on to successfully defend his title against all comers, relinquishing it only upon his retirement in 1949. Not the prettiest copy you're ever likely to find, but a book rarely found in its dust jacket at all, so let's not be too choosy, shall we?
