[minor foxing to page edges, otherwise a good solid copy; jacket moderately edgeworn, some wrinkling along top and bottom edges of rear panel]. Early work by this highly-regarded Austrian author, written and published in reaction to the suicide of his mother the previous year. In the words of one critic, Handke "shows us a both intimate and distant view of the emotional poverty that obviously prevailed in his family" while also showing the reader "a well-embedded rage over this heritage of poverty, inhibition and unsolved problems that his mother left for him, but at the same time, there is an ambivalence, since this is the very conflict that makes him a writer." ( The title of the English translation, published in 1975, was "A Sorrow Beyond Dreams: A Life Story.") [NOTE re edition: although I'm unfamiliar with Austrian publishing conventions (and don't read German), I assume that the designation "1.-25. Tausend" on the copyright page indicates that this particular book was part of the first printing of 25,000 copies and is, thus, the true first edition of this title. If someone informs me otherwise, I'll gladly amend my description.]
