[spine slightly turned, otherwise a nice clean copy with minimal shelfwear; jacket has a few nicks and tiny tears along top and bottom edges, light soiling to rear panel]. Second and final novel by this California writer, about a woman who, while recovering from her son's sudden death and separated from her husband, "finds herself falling in love with a young architect, a newcomer to their close-knit hillside community" -- only to discover, too late, that he is a self-destructive alcoholic. The author and her husband, artist Bruce Ariss, were members of the intellectual community of the Monterey Peninsula, and their home served as a meeting place for artistic and literary figures of the region, among them John Steinbeck, William Saroyan, Charles Chaplin, Ed Ricketts (with whom she had an affair) and August "Gus" Gay. Her previous novel, "The Quick Years," was set in California's Napa Valley. [This book is featured in ReadInk's Catalog #2, "Skirts, in Jackets," available upon request.]
