[slight bumping to corners, attractive vintage bookplate on front pastedown; jacket show some shallow chipping along top and bottom edges, a few small tears]. "The present volume, representing as it does some of [the author's] finest work over a period of many years, will be valued by its readers both as poetry of remarkable beauty and as a revealing portrait of the mind of a great leader." Among the more than forty works included are the words for "Lift Every Voice and Sing," referred to as "the Negro National Hymn," along with a few with what seem like somewhat less uplifting themes, e.g. "Brer Rabbit, You's de Cutes' of 'em All." Per the Foreword, the volume includes a "small number" of heretofore uncollected poems, although they are not specified.
