[minor wear to cloth at spine ends, bookplate on front pastedown and one-time owner's name on half-title page (see notes); jacket has shallow chipping/wrinkling along bottom edge, slight darkening at spine, a couple of vertical creases (showing as white lines) in rear panel]. (Romantic Lives) Series (20 mounted plates, including four in color) One of this publisher's "Romantic Lives" series, five volumes of popular biography about "beautiful and famous women and chivalrous men" (although apparently Bonnie Prince Charlie was the only one of the latter to make the cut; the others included in the series were Marie Antoinette, Mary Queen of Scots, and Lady Hamilton). Illustrated by small mounted portrait plates of the naughty Nell, her family and various intimates -- twenty in all (plates, not intimates), reproduced from various engravings, paintings, etc. This particular copy was once owned by silent-movie actress Jane Novak, as evidenced by her bookplate on the front pastedown and her ownership signature on the half-title page. (Also, and rather oddly, the dust jacket is printed on the verso of the dust jacket for an entirely different book: "The English Character" by Spencer Leigh Hughes, issued by Foulis the same year. A paper-conservation measure, I presume.)
