[good solid clean book, blemished just a bit by some light foxing to the fore-edge; jacket is soiled and worn, internally repaired/reinforced in a couple of spots with brown tape]. Unusual semi-fantasy novel, relating "how a young man in San Francisco sees a murder and meets the murderer, a little old man with green eyes who hates human beings, and of how the youth is haunted and terrified by him. It tells too of how the young man walks in Golden Gate Park and sees a very lovely girl swimming in the lake one moonlit night, and she tells him that she lives in the woods somewhere just beyond the lake." The author had an active but not especially distinguished screenwriting career from the mid-1930s to the mid-1950s (his most notable credit was probably the Astaire-Hayworth musical YOU WERE NEVER LOVELIER), and then transitioned into writing for TV. Also a prolific short story writer (his work was featured in many early issues of Esquire), he apparently wrote only one additional novel, "Clovis," published in 1948.
