1 Kandel, Aben City for Conquest
New York Duell, Sloan & Pearce [1940] Second Edition Hardcover Very Good+ in Good+ dj
[a good solid copy, some minor shelfwear to bottom edge (slight fraying and small exposure of board at one corner), slight fading to cloth at top of spine; jacket edgeworn with numerous small tears, minor creasing, slight paper loss at several corners, shallow chipping/paper loss at spine ends (no loss of text)]. Second hardcover issue of this novel of "the Big Town, and of the little men and women who inhabit it," originally published by Covici, Friede in 1936, which brought forth critical comparison (not unfavorable) with John Dos Passos. This printing, with an entirely new jacket design, was clearly intended to take advantage of the impending Warner Bros. film adaptation (it's briefly referenced in the jacket text as "soon to be produced as one of 1940's most ambitious motion pictures"); an official movie tie-in edition (with a photographic jacket and several stills bound into the text) made its appearance later in the year. Hard to find in any of these three editions; the jacket design on this one makes it the most New York-y of the trio. Oh yes, the film starred Jimmy Cagney and Ann Sheridan.
