1 Austin, Anne Daughters of Midas: The Story of a "Poor" Rich Man Who Meant Well
Chicago The White House (c.1929, 1928) NO First Edition Hardcover Very Good in Very Good+ dj
[light soiling to covers, bottom front corner bumped, slight scrunching and corner-creasing to bottom corners about ten pages near front of book; jacket is very nice-looking, a few tiny closed tears, very slight paper loss at bottom right-hand corner of front panel]. When a wealthy department store owner is told by his son (and only child) that he's not going to take over the family business -- the kid wants to be a composer, of all things -- he reacts by cooking up an essay contest to find the best and brightest among his female employees. He's a little vague about the ultimate prize at first, but after narrowing the field down to three girls, he informs that he wants to make them his foster daughters for a year, during which time he will take them into his home and bankroll the pursuit of their individual ambitions: to become a private secretary, a kindergarten teacher, and a violinist, respectively. (In case you're wondering who the FOURTH pretty young thing pictured on the jacket is, a helpful correspondent has pointed out that it must be the governess. Because of course there has to be a governess.)
