Arraras, Joaquin (translated by J. Manuel Espinosa) Francisco Franco: The Times and the Man Milwaukee The Bruce Publishing Company (c.1938) First Edition Hardcover Very Good in Very Good- dj [solid clean copy, corners bumped, light wear at spine ends; jacket moderately edgeworn, shallow paper loss along top edge, a few other small tears & chips]. (Science and Culture Series) Series Forget all that "brutal, repressive dictator" stuff (which came later, anyway) -- according to this tome, the young Franco was a pretty swell guy, and he gets the full George Washington mythologizing treatment: "his character, his early upbringing, his entrance into the army, his thrilling adventures, his dramatic military career that made him through merit alone a captain at the age of twenty and Europe's youngest general at thirty-two." Much is made of the author's "free access to unpublished official documents and valuable personal records" and his reliance on the supposed facts -- yet one suspects that the publisher might have had a bit of an agenda: one of their other titles, advertised on the rear jacket panel, "destroys the premises of Communism and Bolshevism and substitutes the true Christian doctrine for social reform."
