1 Laurents, Arthur (book), Jule Styne (music) and Stephen Sondheim (lyrics) Gypsy; a musical (suggested by the memoirs of Gypsy Rose Lee)
New York Random House (c.1959, 1960) NO First Edition Hardcover Very Good in Very Good dj
(price-clipped) [solid copy with only light shelfwear, but the verso of the dedication page contains extensive pencil notes regarding the character of Mama Rose, apparently made by actress Fritzi Burr (whose ownership signature appears on the ffep); attractive jacket, with only light wear along top and bottom edges and at spine ends, very slight fading at spine, would grade a little higher but for the price-clipping]. (B&W photographs) Vividly-rendered musical version of the noted ecdysiast's memories of growing up in show biz with the stage mother from Hell. Listening again to the cast album, one is struck by how very many good songs the show contains; unfortunately, the stagy and overlong 1962 film adaptation fails to capture much of the show's abundant pizzazz. Thankfully, the much more faithful and entertaining 1993 TV adaptation (with Bette Midler stepping effectively into the role originated by and forever identified with Ethel Merman) is widely available on video.
