1 (no author) Commemorative Book: St. Petka Serbian Orthodox Church, San Marcos, California
San Marcos CA (Unknown) 1991 NO First Edition Softcover Very Good+
[nice clean copy, mild edgewear, some rubbing to covers]. (B&W/color photographs) 276-page book celebrating the Consecration of this Serbian Orthodox Church, with many photographs and advertisements. Much of the book is not in English (looks like Russian to my eyes), but there are some English-language sections devoted to the history of the Serbian Orthodox Church, and to the history of Serbia itself. (Most of the photo captions are not in English.)

3 The Author of 'No Bed of Roses' [and] 'God Have Mercy on Me! [Marjorie Erskine Smith] With My Eyes Wide Open: The Story of Another Lost Soul
New York Sheridan House (c.1949) NO First Edition Hardcover Good
(no dust jacket) [worn copy, bumped at all corners, heavily rubbed at edges, etc; binding intact and text clean, an acceptable reading/research copy]. Follow-up to the sensational "lost soul" books, "No Bed of Roses" (1930) and "God Have Mercy on Me!" (1931), both of which were written by one-time N.Y. Evening Graphic reporter Marjorie Smith, purportedly based on the "discovered" diaries of one "O.W.," a prostitute and drug addict. Nearly twenty years later, Ms. Smith made another fortuitous "discovery," i.e. that "O.W." had had a daughter, given up for adoption in infancy. Ignorant of her origins, the girl, "Linda Lou Maxwell," is raised by a couple of respectable folks, and seems on track to avoid her mother's life of degradation -- until, in rapid succession: (a) her adoptive mother dies suddenly; (b) her father remarries, to an Evil Stepmother type, who (c) gives her a gift -- a copy of "No Bed of Roses"! -- and helpfully informs her that "your mother was the whore that wrote that book." Nice. So the next thing you know Linda (now obsessed about her "bad blood") runs away from home, goes to New York, and proceeds to be hit on by every man in sight. I think you can see where this is going.
