Mann, Heinrich (translated from the German by Axton D.B. Clark) In the Land of Cockaigne New York The Macaulay Company 1929 NO 1st U.S. edition Hardcover Very Good+ (no dust jacket) [good solid copy, some soiling/spotting to top edge, gilt decoration on front cover somewhat rubbed but still attractive]. The first U.S. publication of Mann's 1900 novel "Im Schlaraffenland," a satirical depiction of middle-class Germans that is described in a brief biographical sketch of the author (by Matthew Josephson) as having been "hailed as a masterpiece that marked a turning point for the German novel." Mann (1871-1950), perhaps best known for his 1905 novel "Professor Unrat" (the literary source for Josef von Sternberg's film THE BLUE ANGEL), was exiled from Nazi Germany in 1933, and eventually joined his younger brother Thomas in the United States.
