1 Hughes, Dorothy B. In a Lonely Place
New York Bantam Books 1979 (c.1947) 0-553-12114-6 / 9780553121148 1st printing thus Softcover Near Fine  Illustrated by (photo cover)
[tight & bright copy, faint handling wear]. Mass Market PB Hard-boiled novel, the basis for Nicholas Ray's 1951 film with Humphrey Bogart and Gloria Grahame (pictured on the cover). The movie is wonderful, but the book is harder and scarier: we're in the protagonist's head from the beginning, and his guilt (unlike in the movie) is never in doubt.

2 Hughes, Dorothy B. Ride the Pink Horse
New York Duell, Sloan and Pearce (c.1946) First Edition Hardcover Good
(no dust jacket) [worn book, a decent reading copy but no more; some deterioration to cloth at spine and hinges, general browning/yellowing of pages due to use of cheap paper stock (typical with this book)]. Hard-boiled suspense yarn about a Chicago tough guy who comes to Santa Fe, New Mexico, seeking revenge for a double-cross. One of this underrated author's most notable works, in large measure because of the stylish film noir made from it by Robert Montgomery (who both directed and starred) in 1947.

3 Hughes, Dorothy B. The Expendable Man [*SIGNED*]
New York Random House (c.1963) First Edition Hardcover Near Fine in Very Good+ dj Illustrated by (dj design) Richard Corson Signed by Author
[nice copy, very light shelfwear to bottom edge, light dust-soiling to top edge; jacket slightly faded at spine, with a few spots (bloodstains?) on rear panel]. SIGNED by the author on the title page. The author's return to fiction after a long hiatus caring for a family member (her previous book had been published in 1952) -- and, as it turned out, her final novel. The plot concerns a UCLA intern, a black man, who picks up a hitch-hiking girl on his way to Phoenix for a family wedding -- and later finds himself accused of her murder, some time after he has refused to perform an illegal abortion for her.
