Nunis, Doyce B. Jr., ed. Southern California's Spanish Heritage: An Anthology [*SIGNED* by the Consul General of Spain] Los Angeles Historical Society of Southern California 1992 0-914421-08-5 / 9780914421085 1st Edition (limited) Hardcover Fine in Fine dj (in slipcase; no dust jacket, as issued) [a beautiful, flawless copy, with no discernible wear to either book or slipcase]. (B&W photographs, facsimiles) INSCRIBED ("Para ___________ / cordialmente") and SIGNED and DATED (L.A. 8-7-93) by Eduardo Garrigues, then Consul General of Spain, on the half-title page; Garrigues also contributed the Foreword. Published in commemoration of the 500th anniversary of Columbus's first voyage to the "New World" (which was here all along), this is a collection of 19 articles from the Southern California Quarterly, all emphasizing the important role played by Spanish explorers and settlers in the history of Los Angeles and environs. Included are pieces about several notable events and personages in SoCal history; various missions and settlements; the original Spanish name for the City of Los Angeles (which makes the point that a prominent downtown plaque got it wrong!); adobe interiors in Spanish California; and so on. Of special interest to bibliophiles is "The Story of California's First Libraries," by Maynard J. Geiger, O.F.M. The limitation pages states that 600 copies were printed, of which 200 were reserved for the Consulate General of Spain in Los Angeles; as this is a presentation copy signed only by Seņor Garrigues, one might reasonably presume that this was one of the 200.
