"This is the very personal account of the nonviolent struggle waged for two months with the authorities of Albany, George by the members of an integrated cross-country peace walk -- jailed when they tried to walk through the town's white business district, jailed again when they tried a second time. The author, who was one of the walkers, recalls how, from within the jail -- most of them fasting -- they succeeded finally in altering the city's rigid stand, and how it felt to endure in their cramped and filthy cages until they did succeed." The author, a feminist/lesbian/peace activist, has been called "probably the least well known of all the great theorists of nonviolence in U.S. history," notably for her strictly secular approach to non-violent protest.
