[solid copy, light dust-soiling to top edge, minor shelfwear; jacket edgeworn, small tears and associated creasing at rear corners, slight paper loss at top of spine, moderate rubbing/soiling]. Novel set in England during World War II, about "an industrious, patriotic, home-loving Englishwoman, a conscientious wife and mother and an adherent of the Catholic faith," who falls in love -- "a blinding and terrifying love" -- with one of the three Italian prisoners of war who are billeted with her family on their farm. The author was a niece of essayist/biographer E.V. Lucas and the granddaughter of poet Alice Meynell; this was her third novel
