[light shelfwear, front hinge a little weak but otherwise a solid book, dust-soiling to top of text block; jacket heavily soiled, some shallow chipping along top edge]. One of those novels that purport to reveal something of the soul of a city through an examination the "inescapable bond" running "through a group of some ten or twelve who thought themselves strangers. We see the wild dramas of a dozen lives: bodies in torment, bodies in ecstasy, a mind distorted by madness, a mind placid with comfort, hearts homesick for the antique world, wills bent to crime or risk or aspiration or desire."
