1 Niles, Blair Free
New York Harcourt, Brace and Company 1930 NO 2nd printing Hardcover Very Good+
(no dust jacket) [solid copy, light dust-soiling to top edge, minor shelfwear]. A follow-up to the author's earlier book, "Condemned to Devil's Island," this one, also set in French Guiana, is described in his author's note as "a novel of elemental universal human passions: a life struggle enacted outside the prison gates in this strange tragic land of convict exiles." He allows as how several characters were suggested by specific ex-convicts of his acquaintance, but "all other characters -- priest and nuns, exiled convicts and native inhabitants -- are creations of fiction, although, in every case, true to types found in Guiana, while the background of the story is as exact as if the book were non-fiction. It is based upon a personal study of the French Guiana penal colony, including a visit to forbidden Devil's Island itself."

2 Niles, Blair Strange Brother
New York Horace Liveright, Inc. 1931 2nd printing Hardcover Good
(no dust jacket) [Good only, a worn but intact copy, slight bumping/fraying at all corners, hinges a little tender but not cracked or split, general external soiling and wear, silver spine lettering heavily rubbed]. Novel, set in New York, about a tormented homosexual (the only kind on view in the popular literature of the day) trying to come to grips with his true nature. In spite of its stereotypical elements, bibliographer Anthony Slide found it "powerful and fascinating," paticularly singling out a passage depicting a Harlem drag ball as "one of the most detailed, contemporary, nongay accounts of such gatherings."
