Boyd, Thomas Through the Wheat [*SIGNED*] New York Charles Scribner's Sons 1923 NO First Edition Hardcover Very Good (no dust jacket) [moderately worn, front hinge cracked but not separated, some surface deterioration to cloth at bottom edges and on spine, faint moisture stain on front cover, very light fraying at several corners gilt lettering strong and easily readable on front cover, somewhat less so on spine]. INSCRIBED ("For / Colonel Harry Lay") and SIGNED by the author on the ffep, and additionally DATED in the author's hand at the top of the page: 2 June, 1923 [or 1933] / Saint Paul. (The date is slightly questionable, since it appears that "3" was written first, then corrected to "2" -- but it might have been the other way around.) ALSO NOTE that a subsequent owner of the book must have disliked the idea of anybody else's name (even the author's!) being written in his book, for he took a marker -- apparently a black crayon -- and CROSSED OUT both the inscription line and Boyd's signature, and then added his single name ("Taylor") in purple ink lower down the page. Because of the nature of the marker he used, it was possible for these lines to be partially erased (which I have done) without damaging the inscription or the signature -- nonetheless, the lines (although fainter) are still visible, and thus the inscription/signature must be regarded as blemished. Still a desirable copy of the first edition/first printing ("Published April, 1923") of this classic novel of World War I. The author had served in the Marines during that war, had been gassed (but recovered) shortly before the Armistice, and after returning to the U.S. and drifting from job to job for a few years, had opened a bookshop in St. Paul, Minnesota [which would argue for the authenticity of the 1923 inscription date]. Through the shop, which became a literary center of the community, Boyd became acquainted with various writers (among them F. Scott Fitzgerald and Sinclair Lewis), who urged him to write a book based on his wartime experiences. Fitzgerald, in fact, was instrumental in hooking the author up with his own editor and publishing house (Maxwell Perkins at Scribner's). One of the earliest realistic novels of the war, the book was highly praised and established Boyd's reputation. Signed by Author Price:
