1 Brown, Ricardo J. (edited by William Reichard) The Evening Crowd at Kirmser's: A Gay Life in the 1940s
Minneapolis/London University of Minnesota Press (c.2001) 0-8166-3621-4 / 9780816636211 First Edition Hardcover Near Fine in Near Fine dj Illustrated by (dj photo) Gilberte Brassai
[nice copy, minimal shelfwear; faint surface wear to jacket]. Posthumously-published memoir by a veteran journalist, recounting his own deeply-closeted gay life in St. Paul, Minnesota, which centered around a downtown bar -- blue-collar during the day, but at night an unofficial gathering place for gay men and lesbians. Candid and occasionally raw, it's "a fascinating portrait of working-class gay male life in the postwar period" (George Chauncey). What's most astonishing, from today's perspective, is how incredibly careful and circumspect these men had to be -- in an era when a single anonymous phone tip about somebody's "deviant" sexuality could (and often did) lead to the loss of a job, social ostracization, family disgrace, even the ruination of a life.
