"When he reaches his sixtieth birthday Mr. Angel, a retired engineer with substantial private means, suddenly develops an obsession with his own safety. A believer in astrology, he detects serious threats to his existence in the constellation of his stars. Convinced, however, that those born under Aquarius (his own sign) are safe in water, he contrives appropriate safety measures for himself. He begins by spending long periods in his bath but soon has a special thermostatically controlled mobile tank built. For his housekeeper, a German-Jewish refugee and the narrator of the story, life with Mr. Angel becomes a nightmare."
