1 Burke, Fielding (pseud. for Olive Tilford Dargan) Call Home the Heart
London/New York/Toronto Longmans, Green and Co. 1932 First Edition Hardcover Very Good-
(no dust jacket) [good sound copy, moderate wear and occasional light fraying to cloth at extremities]. Depression-era proletarian novel about a rural woman who attempts to escape her life of grinding poverty in the Great Smoky Mountains by fleeing (while pregnant) to a mill town, where she gets involved in union organizing that eventually leads to a violent strike. This is generally considered the best of the six "Gastonia novels" published during the early 1930s; these books were all fictionalized treatments of the events surrounding the Loray Mill strike, which took place in Gastonia, North Carolina, in 1929.
