1 Perkins, P.D.; photographs by Francis Haar Geisha of Pontocho
Tokyo Tokyo News Service, Ltd. 1954 First Edition Hardcover Near Fine in Good+ dj
[light wear to bottom edge, minor foxing/faint staining to ffep, vintage bookseller's label on rear pastedown (Perkins Oriental Books, South Pasadena, California); jacket stained and worn, internal tape-repair to small chip at top left-hand corner of front panel]. (B&W photographs, color fold-out map) A photographic essay about one of the oldest and most famous Geisha districts in Kyoto, presenting "a little known side of Japanese life as it was, and still exists today" -- "today," of course, being 1954, although the area reportedly still maintains much the same character nearly sixty years later, containing (per Wikipedia) "a mix of very expensive restaurants, geisha houses and tea houses, brothels, bars, and cheap eateries." Includes glossary and full index; from the estate of noted Hollywood makeup artist William Tuttle, with his stamped ownership signature on the front pastedown. (NOTE that beneath the somewhat beat-up dust jacket, the book's binding -- quarter patterned pink cloth illustrated with little doll-like figures, paper-covered boards -- is quite attractive.)
