1 Grattan, C. Hartley Bitter Bierce: A Mystery of American Letters
Garden City NY Doubleday, Doran & Company, Inc. 1929 First Edition Hardcover California Edition Very Good
(no dust jacket) [moderate exterior soiling/light staining (mostly to spine), rubbing to gilt lettering on spine and front cover; still a presentable copy, firmly bound and internally very clean]. One of the first book-length examinations of the life and work of Ambrose Bierce, divided into four sections: Biographical; Literature; Ideas; Conclusion. From the last-named section: "In the face of all the considerations that can be brought forth for calling Bierce a forerunner of the modern age, it .... must be conceded that he is worthy of a place along with Frank Norris, Stephen Crane, and Jack London, who, in spite of their foibles and failures, are reckoned to have been writers of high merit. He, like those, had a part in the coming of age of American literature."
