"This is a novel about fictional characters living in Los Angeles, California, between 1963 and 1995. Few events portrayed, involving these characters, were taken from neighborhood anecdotes. Most, however, are creations from the author's imagination. In tracing these 32 years, historical events or transformations are used as symbols of change within the community and also to show their influence on its people." The author, per the jacket blurb, was paralyzed from the neck down by a high school football accident, and subsequently devoted his efforts to research into the effects of the media on African-Americans.
