1 Dwyer, Eileen The Kindly Gods
New York The Macaulay Company 1935 NO First Edition Hardcover Very Good- in Good dj
[ex-lending library copy, but minimally marked (just a paste-on label and a small "discarded" stamp on ffep), dust-soiling to top edge, moderate shelfwear, spine slightly turned; jacket heavily edgeworn but intact, flaps glued down]. The author's first novel, embodying "an authentic picture of life in modern Mexico, glamorous, colorful, fresh, and exciting -- romantic and realistic. It shows how the progress of Americanization [love that phrase!] has tinted the volatile native character but has by no means subdued it." The protagonist is "a young man whose fiery passions upset his career as the last of a long line of proud noblemen. He is as cultured and civilized as a European education and American travel can make him. But emotionally and physically he is as untamed as the bandits who sacked his grandfather's house and flogged his uncle to death." He's a ladies' man, too, but "before he can win the happiness of a charming young American wife, he must submit to a wild American experiment -- companionate marriage." (Yankees, stay home, I'd say.)
