[a bit of wear to book at spine ends, otherwise a sound, clean copy; jacket moderately edgeworn, some scuffing to spine]. (B&W photographs) Biography of Count Felix von Luckner, known as "the Sea-Devil" -- "the most dashing and adventurous of wartime buccaneers," whose exploits as commander of a German sailing vessel which raided and captured Allied merchant ships during World War I earned him both fame and the respect of the many Allied sailors he captured -- reportedly without casualties.

[good solid copy, very light soiling/shelfwear to bottom edge; jacket is bright and attractive, although a long jagged tear at the bottom front hinge has been rather crudely tape-repaired (internally), and there's one other (B&W photographs, other illustrations) This "tells-it-all" biography of the author whose formulaic, mass-produced adventure novels fueled the fantasies of millions of American boys focuses on the more sensationlistic aspects of its subject's life, and was, I believe, the first major biography to out him as a homosexual pedophile. In terms of literary analysis, it's the premise of this book that the motiviation behind Alger's writing career was a desire to redeem himself for his transgressions. Interesting to note, however, that this book is NOT on the list of "recommended" sources on Alger's life maintained by the Horatio Alger Society, and I also found one reference to a later book (published in 1980) as "the first biography of Alger which is factually reliable."
