[solid copy, moderately worn at corners and along bottom edge, somewhat heavier wear at spine extremities, bumping and cracking at both ends of spine (not extending more than 3/8-inch into the spine at any point, and not affecting the general solidity of the actual binding); the spine is a little bit turned, and the covers a little bit bowed, and the bottom edges of a few pages in the middle of the book are slightly ragged due to some irregular trimming; the original jacket (although not original to this copy of the book) is moderately edgeworn, with a dime-sized scraped area on the spine, and has been trimmed somewhat unevenly along the top and bottom edges, making it about 1/4" shorter than the book itself]. SIGNED by the author on the title page. A very decent copy of the rarest of the hardcover issues of this author's first three western novels -- this being his second, and also the true FIRST EDITION of this title. [The Dell paperback (#863) is usually listed by booksellers with a 1954 publication date (and occasionally described as a pb original), but in fact both of the standard paperback reference guides indicate that it was issued in early 1956, and thus was predated by this edition, which bears a 1955 title page date. The confusion probably arises because the two share a 1954 copyright date.] Bibliographic parsing aside, in terms of scarcity this title easily surpasses the original hardcovers of both "The Bounty Hunters" and " Escape from Five Shadows."
