Evans, John Shadows Flying New York Alfred A. Knopf 1936 First Edition Hardcover Very Good+ in Good+ dj Illustrated by (dj) [George] Salter [nice solid copy, possibly an ex-rental library book but unmarked as such apart from two stamps on the ffep ("Kenney's Bazaar / 2320 Clement St," across which is stamped "Cancelled"), one-time owner's name and address on front pastedown; jacket is edgeworn, faded at spine, and has been securely backed with some kind of heavy brown paper, which also seems to have occasioned some minor but slightly uneven trimming along the edges]. A novel of "inverted sex relationships" that "explores that realm of violent aberration already made familiar by the poetry of Robinson Jeffers" -- not a coincidental mention, as the book's dedication is "For You and Robin, Una!" (i.e. Jeffers and his wife, certainly known to the author through his mother, prominent arts patron Mabel Dodge Luhan, who in fact once helped to precipitate a suicide attempt by Mrs. Jeffers; but I digress). The plot centers around the slavish devotion of a young man, Jacob, to his enigmatic and somewhat older friend Runyon (described as "Satanic" in the jacket blurb), and the impact of a visit to Runyon's "dark family" -- his mother and sister -- in California's Carmel Valley. The intensity of the Runyon character's loathing for his emotionally needy, "beastly" mother makes me wonder if anybody has even given this novel a close reading in light of the author's relationship with HIS mother -- whose four-volume memoir was being published at the same time, and whose bisexual activities might well have informed his knowledge of "inverted sex relationships." Evans had published one previous novel, "Andrews' Harvest," and was married to another novelist, Claire Spencer; this was his final book, although he is perennially confused by cataloguers with writer Howard Browne (who wrote several hard-boiled mysteries as "John Evans" in the 1940s and 1950s). Anthony Slide selected "Shadows Flying" as one of fifty notable "Lost Gay Novels" in his book of the same name. (There's some incest involved too, did I mention that? Well, jeez, there's only so much space and time.) Price:
