Fairley, W. [William] Epitaphiana; or, The Curiosities of Churchyard Literature; being a miscellaneous collection of epitaphs, with an Introduction giving an account of various customs prevailing amongst the ancients and moderns in the disposal of their dead London Samuel Tinsley 1873 (1875) Later Printing (see note) Hardcover Good+ (decorated red cloth w/gilt spine decoration and lettering; no dust jacket) [moderately worn at all edges and corners, rear hinge starting; boards a little grubby but internally very clean; vintage label on front pastedown with a verse about the lending of books ("If thou art borrow'd by a friend" etc.)]. A compendium of humorous or otherwise unusual gravestone inscriptions, in verse form. The author, in his Preface, gives a brief but rather charming account of his "collecting" activities: "When the author has found himself in a village with a spare moment, it has frequently been engaged in perusing the literature of the churchyard. (Sometimes, much to his chagrin, he has been locked out, and so disallowed the indulgence of his desires.) [Do we believe for a minute that he was never moved to hop a fence?] Many curious verses have thus been collected in his travels up and down the country. At first the curiosities collected were simply intended for the author's own private amusement; they have now, however, swollen to such proportions that he has been induced to give them to the world." (Who applied this "inducement," I wonder?) Includes two indexes: Noted and Eminent Characters; Places. Also includes a 16-page catalog of the publisher's books, dated April 1875 (thus marking this as a somewhat later printing, although the title page states only 1873, the year of first publication).
