1 Janas, Gene They Cry for Mercy
New York Vantage Press (c.1957) NO First Edition Hardcover Very Good+ in Very Good dj
[solid copy, moderate soiling to page edges and bottom edges of covers; jacket a little edgeworn, a bit of paper loss at top of spine (taking the first letter of the title with it)]. Vanity press novel about a "courageous and outspoken reporter" who enters a mental institution as an attendant -- exactly as the author himself did -- in order to uncover "the unmerciful practices endured by those who somehow manage to survive in some of our mental hospitals today." According to the jacket blurb about the author, he spent fourteen months in various institutions, during which time he interviewed hundreds of patients and attendants and studied thousands of records. (It all sounds suspiciously similar to Samuel Fuller's great 1964 film SHOCK CORRIDOR, eh?)
