Edgar Award-nominated as "Best First Novel," the book introduced the character of Terry Traven, owner of the Black Mask Detective Agency in Los Angeles. "At once a proper homage to Raymond Chandler and Dashiell Hammett, and a taut, sometimes comic but always spellbinding mystery." However, there seems to have never been a second Terry Traven novel.
