Wenzlaff, Gustav Gottlieb Drift: A Story of Old Ukraine Los Angeles/Chicago The Grindal Publishers (c.1934) First Edition Hardcover Very Good+ in Very Good dj (price-clipped) [book is square and solid, moderate dust-soiling to top edge, one-time owner's name/address stamp on top edge, fore-edge and ffep; jacket a bit edgeworn, spine browned, minor paper loss at top corners, some marks on front panel somewhat marring the illustration; all in all, though, considering the very cheap paper this jacket is printed on, it's in remarkably good shape]. "In color and spirit the story is true, since the details have a background of fact. The Black Earth country of Ukraine and the prairies of Dakota, as there were in the sixties and seventies, furnished the atmosphere and scenes; and History supplied the outstanding events. Among the latter, the most significant were the edict of Catherine the Great, by which was created the State of Colonists, so to speak, which brought to her country a great influx of population, and the prompt emigration from that land to America of several hundred thousand of these people after the annulment of their highly prized charter written 'in letters of gold.' This is especially important because the great exodus from the German Colonies in Russia occurred when immigrants were needed in the Middle West of the United States. And the Colonists understood pioneering. Therefore, the story, although written for its own sake, has more than mere literary value, especially to those interested in the racial components and development of this land, and to the several million of erstwhile Colonists and their descendants found in the United States, Canada, Brazil, and Argentine, as well as to those still remaining in various parts of Europe."
