1 Grafton, Sue "A" is for Alibi; A Kinsey Millhone Mystery
New York Henry Holt and Company (c.1982) 0-8050-1334-2 / 9780805013344 2nd printing Hardcover Near Fine in Near Fine dj Illustrated by (dj photo) Kathie A. McGinty
[lovely copy, tight and square and apparently unread, absolutely clean inside and out (no marks, names, etc.), with no significant shelfwear, falling a hair short of "Fine" only because of some light age-toning to the page edges; the unclipped jacket (priced $16.95) is similarly nice, with only some light surface wear, no tears or other flaws]. The author's first Kinsey Milhone mystery, and the alphabetic progenitor of an immensely popular series. This is the 2nd printing of the original trade edition (number line 3 5 7 9 10 8 6 4 2), thus as close as you can get to a "true first" edition without spending many hundreds more of your dollars. And since it's the same format as the first (as opposed to, say, the book club edition which is notably thinner and altogether crappier), it's a pretty decent substitute if all you're trying to do is fill out a nice-looking "A"-to-whatever-she's-up-to-now set of the Millhone books. (Anyway, at least you know what you're getting -- and I'll say it again, it's a SECOND PRINTING -- which wouldn't necessarily hold true if you were shopping on eBay, where I can guarantee you that some bozo would be peddling this very same book as a "FIRST EDITION" -- with "2nd printing" mentioned in passing, if at all, and in the smallest available font.)

2 Grafton, Sue "C" is for Corpse
New York Henry Holt and Company (c.1986) 0-03-001888-9 / 9780030018886 First Edition Hardcover Near Fine in Near Fine dj Illustrated by (dj design) Abby Kagan
[quite a nice copy, with the custom bookplate (see notes) on the rear pastedown but no marks of any kind, and no significant wear aside from a few forensincally-detectable traces of having been read once, probably with gloves on; the jacket is similarly nice, despite some very minor crimping at the top spine corners, and some faint yellowing (mostly to the rear panel)]. As Grafton closes in on "Z" (and the end of the Kinsey Millhone series) -- "U is for Undertow" appeared in late 2009 -- the earliest books in this immensely popular series get ever-more-difficult to find in nice condition. "C" also has the distinction of being considered one of the best, having received the Anthony Award (as did "B" before it) as "Best Novel" at the 1987 Bouchercon. This copy also has the customized ownership bookplate -- stating "This Copy of 'C' is for Corpse Belongs To ________" (with NO name filled in -- affixed to the rear pastedown. Shouldn't YOUR name go there? [This book is featured in ReadInk's Catalog #2, "Skirts, in Jackets," available upon request.]

3 Grafton, Sue "E" is for Evidence
New York Henry Holt and Company (c.1988) 0-8050-0459-9 / 9780805004595 First Edition Hardcover Near Fine in Near Fine dj Illustrated by (dj design) Abby Kagan
[very nice copy, no significant wear, just some very VERY light soiling to the page edges, trace evidence of a single careful reading by a singularly careful reader, and a couple of tiny abrasions of mysterious origin on the rear pastedown; the jacket is darn near perfect, with just a teensy bit of surface wear (many would call it Fine without blinking, but a bit of yellowing on the jacket flaps made me blink)]. The fifth -- wait, wait (A, B, C, D, E...) -- yep, fifth in the author's immensely popular and long-running Kinsey Millhone series. An awfully nice copy at an awfully nice price. (No marks of any kind, no spine lean, full number line, it's the real thing; if this one doesn't make you happy, you're clearly the "glass half empty" type.)
