"A superbly anecdotal exercise in autobiography, in which [the author] paints a fantastic canvas of the sixties rich with characters out of a perverse Arabian Nights -- left-wing millionaires, right-wing cardinals, turncoat FBI and CIA agents, compromised college professors, mini-skirted investigative reporters, friendly Minutemen, uptight psychiatrists, miscellaneous spies, bartenders, and over-the-wall ecclesiastics." Hinckle, of course, was a significant Sixties character himself, serving five years (1964-1969) as editor of the muckraking political magazine "Ramparts," an experience he has written about in his 2009 book "A Bomb In Every Issue."
