1 Holbrook, Sabra Children Object
New York The Viking Press 1943 NO First Edition Hardcover Very Good in Good+ dj
[moderate shelfwear, dust-soiling to top edge, corners lightly bumped, a few small scuff-marks on covers; jacket edgeworn, minor chipping along top/bottom edges, small tears & minor paper loss at several corners, 1" tear at top front hinge, spine sunned]. (B&W photo on title page) Uncommon book about Youthbuilders, a movement that apparently flourished for a brief time in the New York City public schools. It consisted of "groups of forward-looking young people who very strenuously object to the common attitude toward children ('Is someone a different person the morning he wakes up twenty-one and can vote?') because they know they have a definite contribution to make to their school, their city, their country, and to the future of the whole world. The keynote of Youthbuilders is the theory that democracy cannot be taught by rote, but must be learned through experience, and that the experience can be both valuable and productive. This book is the triumphant vindication of that theory. It tells of concrete achievements Youthbuilders members have made in such matters as order in the city playgrounds, collection of scrap, the sale of war stamps and bonds, and, most basic of all, the development of true understanding of what democracy really means in terms of equality and freedom. [I dunno -- all sounds pretty radical to me.] It is a book for teachers, social workers, parents, and anyone interested not only in winning the war, but in winning the peace that will come after." The author was Executive Director of Youthbuilders, Inc., had attended Vassar, and had worked at a settlement house and as a case-worker with juvenile delinquents in Boston. (She subsequently went on to write a number of mostly non-fiction works for juvenile readers.)
