[very nice copy, tight and clean, several corners lightly bumped but otherwise no significant wear; jacket slightly browned but still very attractive despite some scuffing/soiling to rear panel, original printed price on jacket ($3.75) covered by publisher's sticker with new price of $4.00]. "Here is the chronicle of the Swales, which is at the same time the chronicle of Haven's End, that mellow New England town of mild aspect and gentle people, which first knew prosperity when run could be traded for blacks in Guinea, and again when privateers reaped a harvest in the West Indies. Here is the story of the boy who pulled the lion's tail, of the pirate who made his daughter an honest woman, of the privateer who married hastily and of others as odd and varied." Reissue of this early work, first published in 1933, by the author who a few years later would win the Pulitzer Prize for "The Late George Apley." Not a novel, but rather a collection of interrelated short stories (many of which had already appeared in The Saturday Evening Post) focusing on the characters and events in Federalist-era "Haven's End" (generally acknowledged to be Newburyport, Massachusetts).
