3 Wilk, Max Rich is Better
New York The Macmillan Company 1962 NOISBN First Edition Hardcover Very Good+ in Very Good dj  Illustrated by (dj design) Riki Levinson
[mild shelfwear, bottom corners lightly bumped, slight browning to page edges; jacket shows a bit of wear at extremities, minor wrinkling to front panel]. The author's second novel, about "Walter Fleming, small businessman and normal neurotic," who has cause to wonder about the wisdom expressed in the book's title (as the end of a quote from Joe E. Lewis: "I have been poor and I have been rich, and believe me, rich is better."). "Partner in an electronics business in a small New England community, Walter is suddenly -- thanks to the development of an electrical gadget that turns out to be a vital component of a supersecret Defense Department project -- rich beyond the dreams of avarice. Strictly speaking, he should be riding high, wide, and handsome; and for a time he does, in a brand-new European sports car de luxe. But the route is not altogether scenic. Some of the blots on the landscape: one partner, a cousin, with a taste for high living; another partner whose engineering genius is impaired by an overly protective wife; a lovely wife who deeply mistrusts their abrupt affluence; a disturbingly attractive Older Woman; a vindictive Amazon who speaks (loudly) for Labor at the shop; an impatient Army major whose approval of the improved model of the aforementioned gadget is all-important."
