1 Roszak, Theodore Flicker
Chicago Chicago Review Press 2005 1-55652-577-X / 9781556525773 1st printing Softcover Near Fine
[minor wear at extremities, light soiling to page edges, otherwise a good clean tight copy]. Trade PB Horror novel (sort of) about an L.A. film buff who develops an obsession with the life and work of a forgotten film director, a mysterious figure who vanished in the 1940s. "Max Castle," the director, is a sort of amalgam of F.W. Murnau and Edgar Ulmer, and the author gets the film-geek/ film-school milieu of the 60's and 70's dead-on. This paperback edition was issued when the book was "soon to be a major motion picture" directed by Darren Aronofsky, although as of mid-2007 that project was apparently placed on hold. It includes an 16-page appendix of "never-before-seen documents excluded from the original edition," the most interesting of which is a long 1972 letter from Edgar Ulmer to the book-within-the-book's author, in which Ulmer sets the record straight about his relationship with Max Castle, and about the latter's non-contributions to Ulmer's great film THE BLACK CAT. It's all completely made-up, of course, but still interesting to Ulmerites.

2 Roszak, Theodore Flicker [Advance uncorrected proofs]
New York Summit Books (c.1991) NO Advance Uncorrected Proofs Softcover Near Fine
[in printed illustrated wraps, with minor soiling to the bottom edge]. Advance copy of Roszak's tale of an Sixties/Seventies-era L.A. film buff who develops "a lifelong obsession with the mysterious Max Castle, a nearly forgotten genius of the silent screen who later became the greatest film noir director -- only to vanish in the 1940s, at the height of his powers." His quest for the truth behind Castle's mysterious disappearance takes him "from Hollywood's Poverty Row into the shadowy lore of ancient religious heresies. He encounters a cast of exotic characters, including Orson Welles and John Huston, who teach him that there's more to film than meets the eye." The cover design for this advance copy is different from the published version.
