[ex-library book, ffep badly scarred by removal of label, a couple of much smaller scars on rear pastedown, but the only actual library marking is a small "withdrawn" stamp on the title page; spine moderately turned but just lightly worn; jacket almost perfect, with just a hint of edgewear]. "A violent novel about a Jewish grocer in a black ghetto. Because Simon Farber can't find a job anymore as a carpenter, a trade he has worked at all his life, he allows himself to be talked into a supposedly money-making proposition involving little effort: to buy and manage a small grocery store in the middle of Washington's black ghetto. When he and his wife and young son move into a room above the store and open for the first day's business -- determined to be fair to their black customers yet make enough to support themselves -- they are plunged into a nightmare battle for existence through a cvhain of assault, robbery, rape, arson, murder and riot."
