Boston Twayne Publishers 1979 0-8057-9268-6 / 9780805792683 First Edition Hardcover Very Good+
(no dust jacket, as issued) [some rubbing to gilt lettering and decoration on spine, otherwise a solid, unworn copy, with a slight musty smell that will probably dissipate over time]. (Twayne's Theatrical Arts Series) Series (B&W photographs) Critical survey of the work of the great American film director. Following the format of this excellent series, the book includes a chronology of Wyler's life, a selected bibliography and a filmography. Because most of the books in this series went to libraries, it's a bit hard to find clean, unmarked copies.

So You Wanna Be a Director? [*SIGNED*], Annakin, Ken
4 Annakin, Ken So You Wanna Be a Director? [*SIGNED*]
Sheffield, England Tomahawk Press 2001 0-9531926-5-2 / 9780953192656 First Edition Softcover Very Good Signed by Author
[slight dog-earing to corners of rear cover, a bit of scuffing and minor creasing to covers, light soiling to page edges, small gouge in bottom edge]. Trade PB (B&W photographs) INSCRIBED generically ("Best Wishes") and SIGNED by the author at the upper corner of the ffep. Memoir by the veteran British director, who (per the cover blurb) "has directed, written and produced over fifty feature films in Africa, India, Malaysia, Scandinavia, China, Europe and America," and to judge from the all-star testimonials (Mike Leigh, Charles Bronson, Robert Wagner, Dorothy McGuide, Julie Christie, Richard Attenborough, etc.) was quite a popular fellow. Yet pick out a genuine classic from among his long filmography. BATTLE OF THE BULGE? THOSE MAGNIFICENT MEN IN THEIR FLYING MACHINES? That's about as good as it gets, and although there's a fair bit of solid entertainment that bears his name, calling him "one of the greatest international film directors" (as the cover blurb does) is, sorry, more than a bit of a stretch. Lanham MD/London The Scarecrow Press, Inc. 2001 0-8108-4032-4 / 9780810840324 First Edition Hardcover Fine in Fine dj
[as new, with no significant wear to either book or jacket]. (Filmmakers, No. 89) Series (B&W photographs) Memoirs of a filmmaker who directed, by his own count, 421 TV films, 92 short subjects, and a dozen feature films -- "none of which are as interesting as the story you are about to read." Although he's refreshingly modest about the aesthetic value of his work, his immortality as an auteur is assured by his solo helming of all six season (170 episodes) of "Green Acres," an absolute masterpiece of mid-century American absurdist cornpone surrealist humor. Ask anybody.

James Dean: A Biography, Bast, William
9 Bast, William James Dean: A Biography
New York Ballantine Books (c.1956) NO First Edition Hardcover Very Good+ in Very Good dj Illustrated by (dj photo) Roy Schatt
[very light bumping at several corners and base of spine, very slight deterioration to cloth at base of spine, small date stamp on ffep; jacket a bit scuffed and edgeworn, one slightly ragged closed tear and associated creasing at top of front panel, small chip at top of rear panel, minor paper loss at spine corners]. (B&W photograph) The first book-length biography of Dean to appear after his death, by a friend (and former UCLA classmate); issued simultaneously in paperback, this is the much scarcer hardcover printing. Many years later, Bast published another book, "Surviving James Dean," that touched on certain aspects of the actor's life that were a little too sensitive to be aired in the 1950s. The striking jacket photo of Dean (by Roy Schatt) is also reproduced inside the book.

Memo from David O. Selznick, Behlmer, Rudy, ed.
10 Behlmer, Rudy, ed. Memo from David O. Selznick
New York The Viking Press 1972 0-670-46766-9 / 9780670467662 First Edition Hardcover Near Fine in Very Good+ dj Illustrated by (dj design) Hal Siegel
[nice copy, binding solid (no small matter in a book of this heft), light shelfwear and minor soiling to bottom edge; jacket shows a little wear along the bottom edge, with a couple of tiny tears at bottom corners and a horizontal crease/wrinkle along the bottom of the front panel, short diagonal creases at top corners of both flaps]. (B&W photographs) An endlessly fascinating read-through of the correspondence files of the legendary producer of GONE WITH THE WIND and other classics (and an occasional non-classic) -- albeit, as editor Behlmer explains in his foreword, presenting "a rather one-sided case, with no opportunity for the several victims of Selznick's unhappiness or, in some instances, wrath, to offer rebuttals or countercharges." The selection of memos -- from among two thousand file boxes of papers -- was a monumental task, and although it was by necessity a highly selective process, at the end you feel like you've gotten a pretty comprehensive picture of DOS: "at times pontificating and overly fussy," as the editor allows, but "also brilliant, knowledgeable, tasteful, painstaking, and possessed by what he was doing."

Allan Dwan: The Last Pioneer, Bogdanovich, Peter
12 Bogdanovich, Peter Allan Dwan: The Last Pioneer
New York Praeger Publishers 1971 0289701228 / 9780289701225 First Edition Softcover Very Good+
[solid copy, light external wear, faint diagonal crease in upper corner of rear cover (Praeger Film Library) Series Trade PB (B&W photographs) "In half-a-century making films, Allan Dwan worked with D.W. Griffith, directed Douglas Fairbanks, Gloria Swanson and Shirley Temple, discovered Ida Lupino, and made action pictures like SUEZ and SANDS OF IWO JIMA." An extended interview (which originated as an American Film Institute oral history) with the veteran film director takes up most of the book, and provides ample proof that Bogdanovich was just as good an interviewer as he was a critic and essayist. Includes an extensive filmography -- and if anybody ever had an extensive filmography, it was Allan Dwan, who started directing movies in 1911 and barely stopped to take a breath until he retired in the early 1960s. [Bogdanovich's name is misspelled "Bogdanovitch" on the book's spine.]

Please Don't Call Me Tarzan, Chapman, Mike
17 Chapman, Mike Please Don't Call Me Tarzan
Newton IA Culture House Books 2001 0-9676080-2-3 / 9780967608020 First Edition Hardcover Near Fine in Near Fine dj
[very nice copy with no discernible wear, would call it "Fine/As New" but for the fact that the bottom corner is clipped off two pages near the back of the book (no loss of text); jacket shows just the slightest handling wear]. (B&W photographs Biography of Herman Brix, an outstanding college athlete (and medal-winning shot-putter at the 1928 Olympics), who had been a bit actor in Hollywood for several years when he was tapped by the Burroughs-Tarzan Corporation for the role of Tarzan in their 1935 serial THE NEW ADVENTURES OF TARZAN. (Edgar Rice Burroughs himself had been unhappy with the screen portrayals of his jungle hero by Johnny Weissmuller and, especially, Buster Crabbe, and had set up a company to make a Tarzan film "the right way.") The serial launched him on a career as an action star, but eventually he found that his identification with the Tarzan role was hindering his career, so he changed his name to Bruce Bennett and re-invented himself as a versatile and reliable character actor, turning in memorable performances in such films as MILDRED PIERCE and THE TREASURE OF THE SIERRA MADRE, and on various television shows well into the 1960s.

[minor shelfwear to bottom edge; jacket shows just a trace of wear at extremities]. (B&W photographs) "A personal exploration of the enigma of the character of Errol Flynn," by the author who ghost-wrote the actor's notorious and just-barely-posthumously published autobiography, "My Wicked, Wicked Ways." He "recounts here how the actor defied the normal during the last year of his life, when they were working together on the book. In three rollicking months in Jamaica, where 'Wicked Ways' was born, Conrad watched the antics, pranks, deviltries, and plain damn wickedness of hedonist Flynn."

Von Stroheim, Curtiss, Thomas Quinn
20 Curtiss, Thomas Quinn Von Stroheim
New York Farrar, Straus and Giroux 1971 0-374-2-8520-9 / 9780374285203 First Edition Hardcover Very Good+ in Very Good+ dj Illustrated by (dj design) Ronald Clyne
(price-clipped) [good solid copy, light wear at corners, a couple of tiny spots on fore-edge; jacket very slightly worn along top edge]. (B&W photographs) The authorized (more or less) biography of the actor-turned-director who made some of the most daring films of the silent era, but was ultimately ostracized for his extravagant ways. Author Curtiss, a one-time student of Sergei Eisenstein (and one-time lover of Klaus Mann), first met von Stroheim in 1940, and became a friend and confidant. The friendship deepened in 1950 when Curtiss settled in Paris and began writing for the International Herald Tribune; by his own account, he was "constantly in [von Stroheim's] company, seeing him almost daily" from then until the director's death in 1957. Their discussions included some talk of working together on von Stroheim's memoirs, but the only result was a half-hearted attempt that failed to interest any publishers. Curtiss obviously regarded himself as von Stroheim's official biographer, but subsequent researchers (notably Richard Koszarski) have demonstrated that he swallowed the filmmaker's own version of his life rather too uncritically.
