500 Miles to Go: The Story of the Indianapolis Speedway, Bloemker, Al
1 Bloemker, Al 500 Miles to Go: The Story of the Indianapolis Speedway
New York Coward-McCann, Inc. (c.1966, 1961) NO 50th Anniversary Edition Hardcover Very Good+ in Near Fine dj Illustrated by (dj design) Ben Feder
[light foxing/spotting to page edges, no other significant wear to book; jacket has a one-inch indentation (like a short wrinkle) in the spine, some minor soiling at the edges of the flaps, otherwise bright and clean]. (B&W photographs) "Completely revised and brought up to date, with new photographs added," this 1966 printing (of a book originally published in 1961) "also takes into account the drastic changes which have revolutionized the sport [in the interim]. Lightweight rear-engine cars have toppled the reliable Offanhauser roadsters from their dominant position in championship competition -- a development climaxed by Jim Clark's sensational victory in 1965." Includes an appendix giving the top ten finishers in each race from 1911 to 1965, together with the winners' times and average speed. (And because I know you're wondering: that speed in 1911 was 74.59 mph.) This edition would seem to be markedly scarcer than the 1961 original.

2 Haney, Lynn The Lady is a Jock
New York Dodd, Mead & Company (c.1973) 0-396-06870-7 / 9780396068709 First Edition Hardcover Fine in Very Good+ dj Illustrated by (dj design) Marcia Erickson
[book itself is clean and unworn; jacket shows a bit of wear along top and bottom edges, one tiny closed tear and associated creasing at top of front panel]. (B&W photographs) The story of "the ramshackle, gypsy life" of female jockeys, of which there were then about sixty in the United States (among them Robyn Smith, described in the jacket blurb as "the top woman rider in the world," who would later become the last Mrs. Fred Astaire). In addition to chronicling "the phenomenal invasion of American racetracks by females over the last ten years," the book "also tells the story of the horse-crazy, fresh-faced young girls who are eagerly taking grubby, backstretch jobs side by side with the winos, pill-poppers, and drifters -- the traditional cadre of serf labor on shed row." The slightly mad-eyed woman depicted in the front panel jacket photo is Mary Bacon, "a daredevil Oklahoma cowgirl who earned money for riding lessons by jumping out of cakes at parties."

[book is nice and clean, with just minor shelfwear; jacket moderately shelfworn, light rubbing/scuffing] (B&W photographs) In this account of "life with the giant jocks," the author "offers an often hilarious, often harrowing, always candid inside look at the life-styles" of various big-time pro sports figures. Simpson (Marquerite, pre-Nicole), Pete Rose, Arnold Palmer, Willie Shoemaker, Rod Laver, Jim Bouton, Jack Nicklaus, Carl Yazstremski, Frank Robinson, even Howard Cosell (although that seems to be quite a stretch on the definition of "jock").
