1 Cohen, Stanley The Game They Played [*SIGNED*]
New York Farrar, Straus and Giroux 1977 0-374-21293-7 / 9780374212933 First Edition Hardcover Fine in Near Fine dj Illustrated by (dj design) Lawrence Ratzkin Signed by Author
[nice tight clean copy, with no discernible wear to book; jacket a little bit rubbed, but bright and clean]. INSCRIBED to friends and SIGNED by the author on the ffep. An "autobiographical documentary" of the college basketball scandal of the early 1950's, when several members of the 1949-50 City College (N.Y.) team -- the first and only team to ever win both the NIT and the NCAA tournaments in the same season -- were arrested for fixing the scores of basketball games. The scandal spread to other New York City teams, and then to colleges in other parts of the country. The author "uses basketball as a means of reflecting on middle-class morality, life in the boroughs of New York, the political climate of the fifties, the mechanics of the legal system, and the differences as well as the similarities between rural and urban America." 3 Michelson, Herb Almost a Famous Person
New York Harcourt Brace Jovanovich (c.1980) 0-15-105069-4 / 9780151050697 First Edition Hardcover Near Fine in Near Fine dj Illustrated by (dj design) Rubin Pfeffer
[nice clean copy, minimal handling wear; jacket mildly rubbed, very short corner creases in front flap]. Tragic life story of Bob Presley, a Detroit ghetto kid whose life went astray when he failed to make the NBA after a successful high school and college basketball career. "Basketball offers young blacks the dream of success: money and fame. Presley never realized these dreams; all he knew was the harsh reality of exploitation by those who control the game-- the coaches, the club owners, the media. [This book] is an indictment of this dream, and of the tremendous emphasis placed on basketball and other professional sports as virtually the only way that a black man can escape the ghetto. No reader of Bob Presley's story will view basketball again in the same way."

(price-clipped) [nice clean copy, top rear corner lightly bumped, one-inch stretch at bottom of front cover is scraped and very slightly split; jacket a little faded along spine edge of rear panel]. The author, a former college and semipro basketball star, believed basketball to be a "spiritual game," and as "a Zen exercise seeking the spiritual radiance of the game," he agreed to coach the Bard College basketball team during the 1979-80 season. Bard, however, was and is a small liberal arts institution -- anything but a sports powerhouse. This is his diary of that season, in which he led a team described as "a ragtag collection of individualists with various degrees of competence and incompetence" to a 1-16 record.
