The Broken Link, "Cornet"
1 "Cornet" The Broken Link
London Geoffrey Bles 1951 First Edition Hardcover Very Good in Good dj
(price-clipped) [lightly bumped at corners, faint dampstain at bottom right corner of front cover, small bookseller stamp at bottom corner of front pastedown; jacket worn and torn across top edge, several small tears elsewhere, moderate soiling overall]. "'Cornet' (the nom de guerre of a distinguished officer in the late Indian Army) is well known to readers of Blackwood's Magazine for his stories of life and sport on the North-west Frontier. This is his first book. The title bears a nostalgic reference to the old days when British officers came to know intimately the Pathan tribesmen and often formed deep friendships founded on a common love of hunting and adventure, and this book, which successfully evokes the spirit of the country and its people, has so many good stories that it will appear not only to those who know India but to many others." Sounds rather like imperialist fantasy-porn, if you ask me; wonder how many Indians were feeling nostalgic for "the old days" along about 1951?

3 Boskovic, Blagoje, and David Dasic, eds. Socialist Self-Management in Yugoslavia 1950-1980: Documents
Belgrade STP (Socialist Thought and Practice) 1980 First Edition Hardcover Near Fine
(no dust jacket, probably as issued) [very slight bumping to bottom corners, tiny scuff mark on front cover, no other significant wear]. Essays, speeches (many by Josip Broz Tito), official documents, government reports, etc., documenting "one of the greatest historical achievements of the working class and all working people in their long, organized revolutionary struggle to build socialism in Yugoslavia," which per the book's introduction had in its 30-year history "emerged as the dominant socioeconomic relationship, as the heartbeat of the social, economic and political being of socialist Yugoslavia, as an ideology and a way of life [as well as] a permanent and inalienable guarantee of the status, rights and responsibilities of working people." (Wonder how that's been going for them since 1980?) The text is entirely in English, very helpful if we want to give this system a shot here, after the revolution.

4 Coates, Austin A Macao Narrative
Hong Kong/London Heinemann Educational Books Ltd. 1983 (c.1978) 962-225-096-3 / 9789622250963 Reprint Softcover Very Good
(French wraps) [light edgewear to covers, minor age-toning to edges of text block, a handful of tiny red ink markings in the margins of a few pages]. (Asian Studies Series) Series (B&W photographs, other illustrations) A short history and cultural study of Macao. The author "explains how and why the Portuguese came to the Far East, and how they peacefully settled in Macao with tacit Chinese goodwill. Macao's golden age, from 1557 to the disastrous collapse of 1641, is vividly reconstructed. There follows the cuckoo-in-the-nest situation of the late 18th century when the British in Macao were a law unto themselves, until the foundation of Hongkong and the opening of Shanghai gave wider scope for their energies. Portugal's subsequent struggle to obtain full sovereignty in 1975 brings the account to present times."

Los Altos CA William Kaufmann, Inc. (c.1980, 1978) 0-913232-69-6 / 9780913232699 First Edition Newspaper Very Good+
[four newspapers, folded in quarters, each 18-22 pages, inside printed card-stock folder; the newspapers are yellowed but still in excellent condition]. (photos, drawings, etc.) This "Newspaper History of Humankind" (described in a publisher's note as the "Experimental Edition") is a "new and different set of newspapers designed to encourage and generate enthusiasm for the subject of history." The newspapers -- four individual issues, folded into quarters and contained inside a cardstock outer sleeve -- cover world history from 3000 B.C. to the present in a unique and innovative fashion, by presenting historical events in the style of modern journalism. "Each page covers an era of world events with irreverent, contemporary headlines, photographs, skillfully composed maps, scaled drawings, and a winning informal mix of textual humor and history. For readers accustomed to an emphasis on 'Western Civilization,' the cross-cultural mix in the papers is exciting and revealing. [The author], a gifted teacher at Southern Oregon State College, presents (side by side with Classical Meditteranean, Middle Eastern, and European history) synchronous developments in Asia, Africa and the Americas going back 5000 years. [The publication] features stories and sections on religion, drama, art, literature, science and politics. Interspersed are editorials, want ads, and advice columns for the lovelorn. [The author] reserves the sports page for news of wars and battles." Very scarce, no doubt because most copies were likely used as intended -- as a teaching aid -- and were therefore disassembled, read, and subsequently discarded. (Even libraries don't seem to have taken much notice of it: OCLC records only five copies, none of which are held by major institutions.) Although the newsprint stock has browned with age, this particular copy was never opened or read.

Stanford CA Stanford University Press 1984 0-8047-1191-7 / 9780804711913 First Edition Hardcover Very Good+ in Near Fine dj
[moderate wear to book along top and bottom edges, slight deterioration of cloth on front cover, otherwise a solid clean book; jacket shows only slight wear along top edge]. "In this study based on a wide array of hitherto unused documentary sources, the author delves deeply into the inner workings of the Nationalist regime and concludes that the Nationalists collapsed largely as a result of their own failings. Most strikingly, he uses the records and memoirs of the Nationalists themselves to document the weaknesses of the Nationalist rule. ... He carefully scrutinizes the relationship between the central and provincial governments, the plight of the tax-burdened peasantry in the Nationalist-held areas, the intraparty politics of the regime as expressed in the Youth Corps and the reformist Ko-hsin Movement, the deficiencies of the army during the wars against Japan and the Communists, the failure of the Gold Yuan currency reform of late 1948, and, finally, Chiang Kai-shek's own assessment of his army and the civilian branches of his regime during the final phases of the war."

[He als] discusses the current threat to Amazonia as forests are destroyed to feed the world's appetite for timber, beef and soya, [and] vividly describes the passionate struggles that have taken place in order to utilize, protect and understand the wonder that is the Amazon."

New York Pantheon Books (c.1969) NO First American Edition Hardcover Near Fine in Very Good+ dj Illustrated by (dj design) Jay J. Smith
[nice clean copy, a bit of bumping to spine ends but no other significant wear; jacket shows moderate wear at corners and edges, a few minor nicks here and there]. (B&W plates) "George III's illness -- momentous in English history -- has remained little understood and what has been written on it is compounded fancy more than fact. Drawing upon extensive manuscript records of the royal physicians, many hitherto unknown, to give eyewitness accounts of all the King's attacks, the authors convey a vivid picture of the patient, his treatments and management, as well as of the epic struggle in the sickroom and the frictions and factions among his entourage. The impact of the royal malady on Georgian medicine turned the 'mad business' into a respectable specialty, and the authors trace its history from these foundations to psychiatry as we know it today."

[nice tight copy, marred only by some spotting to the top page edges; jacket edgeworn (mostly along rear flap foldover, where there also appears to have been a bit of insect-nibbling), otherwise bright and clean]. (B&W photographs) "From an American perspective the counter culture [sic], or youth movement of the sixties, often is viewed as a phenomenon unique to the United States. As proof, some writers cite the emergence of the youth protest movement as being merely a product of the peculiar conditions of the time, such as the postwar baby boom, the temporary domestic economic prosperity, and the social upheaval which was brought about by the civil rights movement and the Vietnam War. In short, opinion has it that the counter culture sprang up from nowhere and just as spontaneously will now pass quietly into history. [This book] tells us otherwise. Here, for the first time, we are presented with a historical study which shows the movement of the sixties to be simply one more step in the evolution of a force which has its roots in earth nineteenth century France."
