Pro Football From the Inside [*SIGNED*], Bass, Tom
3 Bass, Tom Pro Football From the Inside [*SIGNED*]
(n.p.) In Pro (c.1974) NO First Edition Softcover Very Good Signed by Author
[moderate edgewear to covers, scuffing to rear cover next to spine]. Trade PB INSCRIBED and SIGNED by the author on the inside front cover: "For Mort / I sincerely hope / the poems bring / some joy and / understanding of / our great game of / football, / Tom Bass." Yep, despite the locker-room real dope suggested by the book's title -- not to mention the full-rage aggression displayed by the cover photo of the author -- this is in fact a slim volume of poetry, in what one might call the Athletic Brutalist School. (I just made that up.) Sample stanza: "There can be no doubt / who will be the loser / in the end / but I / I would have it / no other way / Pro Football / is my way of life / and part of me shall die / the year / I can no longer play." There's a little poignancy to that last stanza, in fact, since the author's playing career was cut short when contracted polio in college. However, he did go on to enjoy a 30-year career in various coaching capacities at both the college and pro levels (including stints as Defensive Coordinator for the Tampa Bay Buccaneers and the San Diego Chargers for eight seasons in the late 1970s-early 1980s). One of his first gigs as a coach was with the Cincinnati Bengals in 1969, so it's appropriate that the book's Foreword is by the Sports Editor of the Cincinnati Post. Signed by Author

The Boys Who Would Be Cubs: A Year in the Heart of Baseball's Minor Leagues, Bosco, Joseph
4 Bosco, Joseph The Boys Who Would Be Cubs: A Year in the Heart of Baseball's Minor Leagues
New York William Morrow and Company (c.1990) 0-688-08261-0 / 9780688082611 First Edition Hardcover Near Fine in Very Good+ dj Illustrated by (dj) Larry McEntire
[small gift inscription (non-authorial) on ffep, otherwise a nice clean copy, minimal wear, very faint foxing on page edges; jacket shows a bit of surface wear, light staining along edges of rear flap]. (B&W photographs) "In January 1988, twenty years after that dream should have died, [the author] found himself in pro ball. A quirk of random destiny had sent him off to join the Peoria Chiefs of the Midwest League during the rubber-chicken circuit days of promoting the summer game -- to be played by kids almost no one's ever heard of -- in the dead of a Midwest winter. Then came spring training in Mesa, Arizona; then every game, every workout, every midnight postmortem through a long, grinding minor league schedule of interminable prairie bus trips, rain outs, snow outs, and the obligatory A-League promotional gimmickry huckstered up by enterprising owners for the amusements of a Midwest summer's eve. [This book] has it all: the humor; the flat-out all-American nostalgia; the fun; the heartbreak; the spectacle of our national pastime as we somehow never see it in the majors. [The author] is a writer to watch, a passionate observer who infuses every page of his first book with love, lyricism, insight, and the deep passion of a true 'baseball man.'"

6 Bouton, Jim (edited by Leonard Shecter) I'm Glad You Didn't Take It Personally [*SIGNED*]
New York William Morrow & Company 1971 NO First Edition Hardcover Near Fine in Very Good+ dj Illustrated by (dj) Lawrence Ratzkin Signed by Author
[nice tight copy, light shelfwear; jacket slightly yellowed along top edge, minor surface wear, a long (but almost invisible) razor surface-cut on front panel]. INSCRIBED humorously to a friend and SIGNED by the author on the ffep. Bouton's follow-up to his notorious best-seller "Ball Four," much of it devoted to the reaction and response to that book. Includes his "side-splitting encounter with Baseball Commissioner Bowie Kuhn, who thought 'Ball Four' would ruin the game; his fascinating and extraordinarily open disclosure of the money involved in writing a best seller; his tales of the angry and funny reactions of the players themselves to having appeared in 'Ball Four'; a whole series of new portraits and anecdotes about the grown men who play this boys' game." Calypso: The Four-Trump Game, Culbertson, Jo; edited by Geoffrey Mott-Smith and Alphonse Moyse, Jr.
7 Culbertson, Jo; edited by Geoffrey Mott-Smith and Alphonse Moyse, Jr. Calypso: The Four-Trump Game
Philadelphia/Toronto The John C. Winston Company (c.1955) First Edition Hardcover Near Fine in Near Fine dj Illustrated by (dj) Ann Atene
[nice clean book, minor wear to cloth at spine extremities; jacket bright and attractive with only minor edgewear]. (B&W illustrations) "Calypso, that fascinating and tantalizing [card] game, born in Trinidad and brought up in London, comes of age" with the publication of this book, although it appears to have gone into arrested-development stage soon thereafter. I found an online source that claims there are still "a number of devoted players, especially in New England (especially Western Massachusetts)," but I haven't verified this through field research. It's a four-player game using four 52-card packs mixed together, with four deals, one-quarter of the cards being dealt out each time; the objective is then to use cards won in tricks to collect complete 13-card sequences in one's own and one's partner's personal trump suit. Kids! -- DO try this at home!

[nice tight clean copy, as-new but for the slightest bit of wrinkling at top of front jacket panel; NO remainder or other marks]. I love that the only official Library of Congress-suggested subject heading for this book is "Golf -- Psychological aspects." Far as I'm concerned, golf is nothin' BUT psychological aspects.

[nice tight clean copy, appears unread, a couple of extremely light dents in top edges of covers; jacket shows only some very minor wrinkling at top of rear panel]. (B&W photographs) Memoir by the Heisman Trophy-winning running back who went on to become an NFL star for the Green Bay Packers, under legendary coach Vince Lombardi. However, his off-the-field partying, girl-chasing and gambling eventually caught up with him, and at the height of his career he was caught up in a gambling scandal and suspended from the NFL for a year. (This was a very big deal, I seem to remember -- I was ten years old at the time -- although in the context of the peccadilloes of some of today's top athletes, Hornung's transgressions seem kind of quaint. At any rate, he owned up to his misconduct, was reinstated -- reportedly thanks to heavy lobbying by Lombardi -- and went on to play three more seasons for the Packers.)

[beautiful, as-new copy, with no significant wear to either book or jacket; jacket a teensy bit faded at spine]. "Collected here are baseball poems written over the past four decades by fifty-seven contemporary poets, including Richard Eberhart, Donald Hall, Robert Penn Warren, Richard Hugo, and Gail Mazur. [Also Gregory Corso and John Updike.] Few of them venerate legendary baseball players. Instead, they celebrate all the wonderful variations of the game itself: the minor leagues, college ball, high school, American Legion, Babe Ruth and Little League, pickup games in sandlots and pastures, family games of catch in backyards, softball, stickball, tennis-ball-against-the-wall ball."
