2 Anti-Saloon League of America Proceedings of the Sixteenth Annual Convention of the Anti-Saloon League of America; Atlantic City, New Jersey, July 6-9, 1915
Richmond IN S. E. Nicholson (1915) Wraps Very Good-
(no dust jacket) [ex-library with fairly minimal markings (incl pocket on rear pastedown, date due slip on last page), some curling at corners, a few creases in rear cover]. Includes reports from many individual states on the progress of prohibitionist activities. One highlight is the "Hall and Summers Dialogue-Debate," which is essentially a two-character play which takes place "when Tom O'Neill comes to the office of the License Commission to pay his annual liquor license," and gets in a long discussion with the Commissioner, in the course of which he spouts great dialogue like "Ain't that a beautiful bungaloo?" and "Oh, you poor boob." A fascinating social-historical document.

Tales of the Road, Crewdson, Charles N.
6 Crewdson, Charles N. Tales of the Road
Chicago Thompson & Thomas 1905 NO Second Edition Hardcover Very Good+ Illustrated by J.J. Gould
(no dust jacket) [solid, nice-looking copy, light wear at extremities; once part of a private (individual's) library, it bears his name and address stamp on the ffep and an additional name and property stamp on the front pastedown; there is also a small label with a number affixed to the spine, but aside from that there are no other markings]. (B&W frontispiece and 15 B&W plates) Classic account by a traveling salesman, imparting to the reader all the wisdom he's accumulated in his travels. "Salesmanship is the business of the world; it is about all there is to the world of business. Enter the door of a successful wholesale or manufacturing house and you stand upon the threshold of an establishment represented by first-class salesmen. They are the steam -- and a bit part of the engine, too -- that makes business move. I saw in print, the other day, the statement that salesmanship is the 'fourth profession.' It is not; it is the first." Terrific period illustrations, with droll captions: "To-night we dance, to-morrow we sell clothes again."; "I listened to episodes in the lives of all those seven children."

Maine Charm String, Graham, Elinor
9 Graham, Elinor Maine Charm String
New York The Macmillan Company 1947 NO 2nd printing Hardcover Very Good+ in Fair dj Illustrated by (dj) Jean des Vignes
[solid copy with minor shelfwear, slight yellowing/soiling to page edges, gift inscription (non-authorial) on ffep; jacket is somewhat tattered, with several fingertip-size chips and a bevy of smaller ones, although the front panel illustration is mostly intact, as is the spine text]. "This book is partly about a hobby -- button collecting -- and as such it will fascinate all who have felt the collector's urge. It is must more the story of Maine, and of Elinor Graham's love for her home there and for the people who are her neighbors. The author came upon her hobby unexpectedly. Digging in her garden one day, she turned up a button from a Revolutionary soldier's uniform. This innocent discovery took her down strange and absorbing paths and into farm kitchens and attics and sitting rooms where she collected stories and adventures, as well as buttons from charm strings. Her story abounds in lively, witty anecdote. It is also full of beauty, for Mrs. Graham not only views her own activities with a wickedly humorous eye, she has an artist's ability to see and describe the loveliness of her strip of Maine coast and depict the kindly and salty character of the Maine people." The author (1896-1984), a former actress, wrote at least two other books about her life in Maine, "Our Way Down East" (1943) and "My Window Looks Down East" (1951).
